South Park San Diego Comes Into Its Own

You may have grown up in San Diego and still not know exactly where South Park is. This historic neighborhood is nestled between North Park and Golden Hill, just east of Balboa Park and northeast of Downtown San Diego.

First registered as a subdivision in 1870, the South Park Addition was too far from Downtown San Diego to attract development until its purchase in 1905 by E. Bartlett Webster. The Bartlett Estate Company put in sidewalks, water, sewer, electricity, and other amenities and began selling lots, positioning the neighborhood as a "high-class residential district".

South Park is now considered one of the major historic urban communities of San Diego and has long been proposed as a registered historic district.

Like other neighborhoods nearby including North Park, University Heights, South Park has seen ups and downs both in housing and business over the years. Currently it is undergoing on of the biggest and most significant redevelopment phases since its inception. The community boasts over 70 independent retail boutiques, shops, Coffee Shops, Restaurants, craft brew pubs, yoga and fitness studios etc. most within walking distance for those that live in the neighborhood.  It is awesome to watch that the same things deemed important when these communities were originally developed are now relevant again!

The main road running North and South through the neighborhood is 30th Street, which is marked for both cars and bicycles and is served by the number 2 line bus. 30th Street forms its main business district and has been called the nation's best craft beer boulevard by Men's Journal.
